I really like adorable, vintage-inspired salt and pepper shakers. My grandma always switched out her funny figurines seasonally, and I’d love to keep up with that tradition. Every Thanksgiving ushered in these super chintzy Turkey shakers, and I have to say, I adored them. It’s certainly not a year round thing, and I definitely think too much retro can be a bit overbearing, but little touches here and there can make for great gifts!
Although my grandma’s salt and pepper shakers are genuinely old, Retro Planet is the perfect place to find decently priced vintage goods. It’s actually like discovering where Johnny Rockets does all of its buying! There are kitchen goods, linens, signs, toys and home décor. Just enough ‘heirloom’ adds a little flavor. Maybe it’s because I’m a fan of tchotchkes, but I also love the idea of continuing on a family tradition, and giving my future apartment a vintage twang! Modern heritage is all the rage, apparently. (Every time I say that now I think of the “Apparently” kid…) Here are some of my favorites from Retro Planet, but feel free to explore the site. It’s funny and weird, and I like it.:
